Re: Confidential

Hi Tess,

I arrived in town a few hours ago. I’ve made an interesting discovery about the cold case murder that I’m investigating, and I believe you can help me. Please reach out to me tomorrow afternoon if you are able. I’m staying at the St. Hamilton Hotel.

Hope to hear from you.

Antwan

Tess was more puzzled than ever. “Why in the world does he think I can help him with a cold case murder?” Tess mumbled in a whisper as she scratched her head. “I’ve only been living in Bourbon for six months, and I barely know anyone in this town.” After reading the message again, the only thing that was clear to Tess was that Antwan had no doubt seen her post because his message was serious, to the point, and all business.

Tess had to admit that she was more than a little curious. She knew that while Antwan may have been a despicable, lying, cheating boyfriend, he was a hell of a journalist with a stellar reputation for dogged professionalism and a passion for honest reporting. Tess knew that if Antwan had gone so far as to contact her regarding his story, he must have some solid, airtight evidence that had led him to believe she could help him in some way. She looked at the clock and saw that it was almost midnight. She knew that if she reached out to Antwan right now, either by email or phone, he would respond right away because he was most likely still up, as was the case with most fellow writers whom she knew.

She was about to press return on the email and send Antwan a message, but a little voice inside her head said, Girl, don’t reach out to that man unless you have a plan of how you’re going to deal with him.

Tess’s eyes scrutinized Antwan’s email again, and it struck her that he had ended his message by conveniently sliding in the name of the hotel where he was staying. She thought it was an interesting coincidence that Arizona’s husband happened to be the general manager of the St. Hamilton. Why did he tell me where he’s staying? Does he want me to meet him at the hotel? Tess wondered. Yep, I need to figure out a plan for what to do.

Tess knew that in order to develop a good strategy she needed great advice. “Bernadette!” she whispered out loud. She knew that if anyone could help steer her in the right direction it was her cousin. She needed to talk with Bernadette anyway because she had promised to call her and let her know how her appointment with Dr. Vu had worked out. Although she had disappointing news to share with her cousin, she knew that Bernadette would give her the comforting, listening ear that she needed in order to deal with the disappointment and realization that she wasn’t able to have children.

Tess rose from her computer, went back to the bedroom, and reclaimed her space next to Maceo.
