CHAPTER SEVEN
Quade decided that he could afford to wait. In the meantime, there were about twelve thousand survivors of the battle to be coerced into his service. Before that, however, there was a little experiment he wanted to try outâ.
The Master had survived the battle but defeat had done nothing for his mental stability. He sat on the wreck of a burned-out truck biting his nails and trying to determine who was responsible for his downfall.
In the middle of his contemplation, a small red flame appeared on the third knuckle of his left hand.
The Master stared at it, then brought the palm of his right hand down on the flame.
When he removed it, however, the flame was not only still there but had transferred a similar flame to his right thumb.
The Master stared desperately about him and saw, not twenty feet distant, a small stream. He ran to it and thrust his hands into the deepest part of the icy water he could find.
He was horrified to see the flames still burning beneath the surface. He thrust them deeper into the sand and mud at the bottom of the stream.
When he withdrew them, the flames still burned steadily and the little finger of his left hand was also alight.
The pain was agonizing, his fingers felt as if they were being pressed to a red hot stove.
Abruptly the fingers of both hands ignited and the flames leapt higher. The pain became unbearable and his mind cracked.
He ran across the deserted battlefield, leaping over bodies and dodging round wrecked vehicles, screaming.
As he ran, he beat at his body and, where his hands touched, the flames took hold.
Soon he was a running effigy, no longer human, red flames streaming out behind him.
He began to slow, lurching from side to side and then, suddenly, the flames engulfed him. Briefly, the shimmering outline of a human form seemed to hang in the air and then all was gone. Only a few white flakes of ash drifting down to the grass showed that he had ever existed.
Quade smiled to himself, it had been an informative diversion but he regretted that the Master had been too deranged to fight back.
