“In the evening, when I got up from the opium brazier, I looked out from the opening in my room and saw a black tree and the door to the butcher shop, which they had boarded up. Dark shadows mingled with one another—everything seemed empty and transient. The tarred, black sky was like a worn chador through which countless bright stars had poked holes. At that moment, the call to prayer rang out—a call to prayer at the wrong time. Apparently, a woman—maybe that slut—was giving birth, was going into labor. Against the call to prayer, you could hear a dog howling. I thought to myself: If it’s true that everyone has a star up in the heavens, then my star must be dark, far, and meaningless—maybe I didn’t have a star at all.

“Then the sound of a group of passing, drunken patrolmen rose up from the street. They were making crude jokes with one another and then started singing with one voice:
