Chapter 7
Meadow
From the first conversation I had with Cirane on video comm while enroute to Melrun, she insisted my friends and I stayed with her until I agreed to be Zaithâs mate or we chose to leave the planet. She reassured the three of us we would always have a place with her. My heart knew what it wanted, but my mind hadnât caught up or agreed - yet. While I wasnât sure what Iâd pick
As the Slay lowered into Melrunâs atmosphere, Zaith and Klaus lowered the ship slowly, and stayed in orbit long enough to show us the four main continents and the planetâs three moons. Zaith stood behind me, pointing out and naming each of the four major land masses, one for each biome. His finger shook a bit when he pointed to Aslura, a woodland heavy continent he called home. Though Klaus retained a house on Aslura, his main residence was on Pimozi, the smallest of the continents, which appeared to be a frozen tundra similar to Antarctica. Zaith and Klaus were shocked when we told them Earth had seven continents with diverse landscapes and ecosystems.
Once the Slay landed on Melrun, we were greeted by Zaithâs mother, Cirane, who ran to us with open arms. The descent ramp had barely touched the ground before she raced up to her son and wrapped her arms around him in a hearty embrace. With her one arm clasping Zaith, she motioned me to join in the hug. Zaith nodded in encouragement and with tentative steps, I inched forward. I couldnât shake the feeling that those few steps would determine my future.
My feet hadnât touched solid ground, planetary ground, since I was taken from Earth, and I was unprepared for the flood of emotions that coursed through my body when I stepped onto Melrun for the first time and felt fresh air on my skin. Victoria, Noelle and I held hands and cried as we sank to our knees and felt grass. Iâd forever be grateful to Zaith, Klaus and Cirane for staying back and allowing the three of us to process our emotions.
Cirane was beautiful, gregarious and just as intense as Klaus described. Her laughter and smile were contagious, which helped to put me at ease. I liked her immediately. Small happiness wrinkles formed at the corners of Zaithâs eyes as his gaze flitted between us. For the first time in months, I felt like I belonged. My heart sang at the prospect.
Once Cirane learned the meaning behind my name, she practically bullied her son and nephew to take us to a grove of flowers, or as she referred to it, âyour namesake.â Victoria, Noelle and I knelt in the dark green grass, so similar, yet so foreign from the grass we knew and marveled at its softness. I couldnât hold back tears as I felt the grass underneath my feet and warm sunshine on my skin. Cirane instructed Zaith and Klaus to make a trip to pick up local delicacies and drinks she thought we would like.
