“Where’s super troop and your battlesynth muscle at?”

“No idea, sir,” MG said. “I just go where they tell me.”

He’d been on Eshquaria for two days before Buzzkill had landed at the starport in Dihero. Umpire had ordered him to link up with them and leave Sully on the ship in case they needed an emergency evac. Buzzkill’s ship, the Abigail, was parked next to the larger Corsair on an auxiliary landing pad that was secured by Imperial Guard troops.

“You’re with us, then,” Captain Al May said. “You have any better idea what the hell is going on than they told us?”

“I’m not sure what they told you, sir,” MG said. “We were tracking Carolyn Whitney, and someone has dug up credible intel that she plans to hit this summit, but we’re not sure who the target is.”

“The Viper, huh?” May grunted. “You boys went up against her once before. How did that go?”

“She kicked all of our asses at the same time,” MG said. “But Captain Brown was still green, and we didn’t have Tin Man yet. Was almost hoping for a rematch this time before we got all shot up on Pinnacle.”

“I think I’d rather just call in an orbital strike on her position,” May said. “I’ve heard of what she’s capable of. I don’t know if you heard, but the Kentucky is also on the way. We’ll at least have some reliable backup if this goes sideways.”

“Yes, sir,” MG said. “Where do you want me?”

“Pair up with Sandoval,” May said. “You’ve been here before?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good. First, drop the sir crap and call me May. Next, you and Sandman do a recon walk of the area. Just get a feel for the comings and goings of the locals and give me your impressions of their security and possible vulnerabilities.”

“You ready?” Sandoval asked. “Then, let’s roll.”

The pair took the public tram into the city center, both wearing passive scan IDs that would let the Imperial Guard know they were off-world security and approved to carry the concealed weapons they had on them. Thanks to Captain Brown’s personal relationship with T’Cali Amon, MG’s band actually cleared him to carry anything short of a guided missile launcher while Sandoval was limited to a sidearm for self-defense.

Once the tram dropped them off, they moved to blend in with the crowd and walked along the wide pedestrian pathways, taking it all in and trying not to appear too obvious. They’d walked by the compound where the summit would take place when MG came around the corner and collided with someone who was much more solid than their slim frame would indicate.

“Sorry about that,” he said as the being turned around. She was wearing a hood, but he saw who it was immediately. “Son of a—” was all he got out before a hand that was hard as steel whipped out and caught him in the throat. As he was going down, she punched him in the side of the head, and it was lights out.
