Keela
Our second instructor arrived on First-day. "Good morning, students," she greeted us. "I'm Instructor Nissa. I'll be teaching you how to deal with metal, whether it's blades, weapons or vehicles. Some of you may be able to melt the metal gears or wheels on an armored tank from a distance, if Instructor Bel's assessment is correct."
Hisan, Rade and I exchanged glances.
That would beâoutstanding, Rade sent.
Absolutely, I replied, turning back to Instructor Nissa. "We'll begin small," she said. "You'll learn to tell the difference between actual metal and something made to look like metal. This way, the enemy won't be able to fool you with false constructions."
"Does that happen?" Mey asked.
"Battles have been won because of clever construction," Nissa responded. "It's our job to ensure that the enemy doesn't gain the upper hand by presenting false weapons or vehicles."
"I never knew battle mages could be so talented," Maxx said. "I always thought they merely lobbed blasts or bombs at the enemy."
"Wait until you begin laying traps for the enemy," Nissa smiled. "Imagine the ground falling beneath the enemy's front line, pitching them into a deep pit. Imagine huge barbs emerging from the ground to halt their vehicles, or the ground rising beneath your own troops to give them a better vantage point. Even if the enemy has mages of their own, it will take time to remove all these obstacles, which, as you know, can mean the difference between winning and losing."
"Thank you for coming to teach us," Mey dipped her head to Instructor Nissa. "You and Instructor Bel, too. I never imagined employing my talent in these ways."
"It is my understanding that Cjerl's forces are better equipped than you have been in the past, both in weapons and troops. We must use everything we have to stand against them. Now," she said as two polished metal balls appeared in her hands. "One of these is metal. One is not. You may not touch or feel either."
The balls were set on a nearby table. "Take a seat on the floor and turn your thoughts to both. In your mind, determine which is heavier."
I sat with the others, but I already knew what Instructor Nissa wanted. The ball on the right was metal, but hollow inside. The other was a wooden shell, painted to look exactly like the other. It was heavier because it was filled with sand.
"Write your answer on the paper I'm handing out. Include your name, please," Nissa walked around the room, handing each student a slip of paper.
I know you know, she sent as I was handed my paper. Keep it to yourself, please.
I will, I replied.
"Answers, please," she collected all the papers she'd delivered, and handed each of us a second paper. "Now," she said, "tell me which ball is metal."
A quiet gasp came from one or two students, while others quickly wrote on their second slip of paper. I filled mine out, too.
"Hold your papers up," Nissa instructed. Each one lifted from a hand and floated toward the desk, where they neatly piled atop one another.
