EXPOSURE VS. BRIGHTNESS

In some Raw converters, altering the exposure is very close to changing the exposure settings at the time of shooting, and so will clip highlights if raised high enough (and shadow clipping also in the opposite direction). The Brightness slider, on the other hand, works within the upper and lower limits, and so avoids, for the most part, clipping.

However, more recent versions of Lightroom (4 and beyond) utilise the new PV 2012 adaptive processing algorithm and have dispensed with the Brightness slider, with the new Exposure control leaving the black and white points more or less untouched. If highlights or shadows do become clipped, these are now recovered using the Highlights or Whites, sliders or the Shadows and Blacks sliders, respectively.
