CHAPTER SEVEN

The following morning, I woke with an ache in my back. The temptation to drive to the shops to buy a decent sofa is strong. I have a credit card that’s nearly empty. I can afford the minimum payments, I’m sure I can. I mean I have one more pay day coming anyway. I want to just get in my car and go and buy the comfiest one I can find for the most reasonable price. I won’t though. No point in fanning the flames of our burning relationship.

“And how the Hell are you going to pay for that?” she’d ask if I came home with anything new. I can hear her now. “Oh - wait - you don’t have a job. I suppose that’s something else for me to pay for.”

The only positive is that I’d have somewhere comfortable to sleep when we continue to argue.

I was standing in the kitchen watching Tina through the window. I had let her out of the hutch earlier and she was already milling about her new pen, exploring the area - not that there was much for her to explore. Her lack of space, I actually feel a little bad. She had much more room at the farm I pulled her from.

Would the farmer take her back?

The toaster popped up my freshly toasted pieces of bread. I picked them up and started to butter them with the Flora, taken from the fridge. I joined the kids who were already sitting down for their breakfast; two bowls of cereal with milk.

Their mother hadn’t come downstairs yet. I know she is up. I could hear her slamming around up there. Hard to say if she is still in a bad mood or whether it is part of her usual morning routine. I guess I’ll know for sure when she comes down for her breakfast although - looking at the time - she is cutting it fine if she wants anything to eat.

Ryan jumped up from his chair and took his bowl - now empty - over to the kitchen sink. He dropped it in the warm, soapy water and went to leave the room.

“Can you put your sister’s in there too, please?” I asked him nicely. She too had finished and was just finishing up with her glass of orange juice. Ryan didn’t answer me. He left the room. I swallowed the slow-building rage back down to the pit of my stomach and wondered whether I could get away with feeding Ryan to Tina. Would she eat him if I cut him up into really small sprinkles of flesh? I shook my head - both at my thought and his ignorance.

With her drink finished, Zoe also got up from the room. She left the room, leaving her bowl in place.

“Get your shoes on, kids!” Becky shouted from down the hallway. Here we go then. Let’s see what mood she is in. I watched the doorway as Becky walked down towards it. She stopped short of actually coming into the kitchen.
