That evening, as everyone was getting dressed to go out to dinner, Morgan turned to AJ. âHey, Mr. Fiancé, I need to talk to you about something kind of serious.â
AJ turned, his stomach dropping as he wondered if heâd done something wrong without realizing it. Morgan didnât look mad though. âWhat is it?â He asked.
âItâs about Zage and his skiing.â
âThe kidâs freaking amazing! Did you hear me trying to tell Raquel about it?â
âUm, no, but Raquel talked to me about your conversation later.â Morgan stared at him for a minute, not saying anything. At first, AJ thought she was searching for words, but when did she start to talk he thought the pause mightâve been just to lend gravity to what she was about to say. âItâs really⦠really important that you not talk about it, okay?â
âBut⦠but why?! Raquel shouldnât be hiding this! She should be trying to get him training! Youâd expect someone thatâs this good at age five would grow up to be an Olympic contender!â
Morgan took his hand as she spoke quietly, âMy family keeps a secret for one of my uncles. Mom, dad, Shan, my sister, we all know about it, but none of us ever talk about it except to one another and even thatâs very seldom. Itâs a secret thatâd be a disaster for my uncle if it got out, so, itâs really important, and we go to great lengths to keep it to ourselves.â
Puzzled, AJ said, âWhat is it?â
Morgan shook her head, âThatâs the deal. I canât tell you. Iâd trust you with my life, but you really have no âneed to know,â so Iâm not going to tell you. Itâs the kind of secret that we donât tell even family members just because theyâre curious. I canât imagine why youâll ever have a need to know, so I donât expect weâll ever be telling you.â She tilted her head as if assessing his reaction, âCan you understand that?â
AJ shrugged, âSure.â He frowned, âBut how could this secret have anything to do with Zageâs skiing?â
Morgan shook her head, âIt doesnât. Thisâs a different secret from my Uncleâs. And thisâs a secret that you probably will need to know someday. In fact, itâd have been good if youâd known it today, so I want to tell you about it now.â
âOh,â AJ gave a nod, âokay.â
âBut, Iâm wanting to make sure you understand that thisâs serious. Really serious. Not something you talk to your buddies about over a beer. I need you to know that if you let it slip out, I, and everyone else in the family are going to be very disappointed in you.â
âMorgan, I understand. Iâll defend this secret against all comers, whatever happens.â
âOkay, now imagine you were an amazing and famous athlete, and, because of that, you never got any privacy. People and paparazzi hounded you all the time, wanting you to do this and that and making various demands. Sometimes youâre even attacked by people trying to force you to do things.
