From Beaufort’s apartment, I headed by air car back to TelCorp to report that everything seemed a-okay with my last binding. I needed to cover all my bases, make sure everyone thought I was continuing to do my job diligently.

Most of the other binders were gone when I got back, out looking for Cindra, I presumed. Elias was shut away in his office. Jer was still there, though, as always sitting at his desk by the elevator and probably pretending to get work done.

“That took a while,” he said, glancing up at me when I walked in.

“Tell me about it,” I sighed, slumping my shoulders. “That damn client was a piece of work, I’m telling you.”

“Really?” Jer laughed. “What was wrong with ‘im?”

“What wasn’t?” I groaned, falling into a nearby desk chair since my own was on the other side of the room. Though I disliked the guy, catching up with Jer on TelCorp’s recent activities was a good idea.

“That bad, huh?” Jer chuckled, turning off his computer and giving me his full attention.

“The worst. Literally the worst client I’ve ever had,” I groused. “I mean seriously, this guy wouldn’t shut up. He wouldn’t even let me inspect him for like an hour or more!”

“Seriously?” Jer asked. Beaufort’s behavior really was unusual.

“Yep, he kept saying he didn’t want me to know certain things about him or whatever,” I explained.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Jer grimaced. “Glad he’s not my client.”

“No kidding.” I shook my head. “He said he didn’t want me to know anything about his job. It’s not listed on his profile. I didn’t really learn anything when he finally did let me inspect him, except that whatever he does isn’t strictly legal.”

“Hey, my client’s got a similar thing goin’ on,” Jer said, jutting a finger at me. “He’s got no income listed either, but when I met with him here this morning, he went on and on about how much money he makes. But he said he couldn’t tell me anything about it.”

I raised my eyebrows. Kira’s friend Kinley was taken at the same time as she was by a guy who seemed to know Beaufort.

“Really?” I said. “My client said he and some friend of his found their foxgirls together. I wonder if your client’s the guy he was talkin’ about.”

“Yeah, mine said something similar,” Jer said. “Said they found the girls down by the docks. Oh, jeez, I hope he’s not as weird as your guy. I don’t wanna deal with that.”

I laughed, covering up my glee at having discovered Kinley’s binder. “I bet he will be. I mean, I’m telling you, this guy’s weird as fuck, man. Really weird. When’s your check-up?”

“Well, I haven’t even done the binding yet,” Jer said. “It’s not ‘till the day after tomorrow. Dude’s kinda freaked out with everything that’s happening right now. That’s why I had to meet with him today. He’s all worked up, keeps backing out and then changing his mind.”

I had to stop myself from whooping with joy.
