Chris didnât know how long he wept. But when he finished, he felt refreshed. As he stood, he breathed in deeply. The air seemed clearer and the smells of the forest more exquisite than ever. He was part of it in a way he had never experienced before.
A crunch of dry leaves turned Chris around. He saw Echohawk approaching the truck. When the Native American spotted him there was a look of surprise that turned to anger. âWhat are you doing here, crying like a baby?â
Pulling himself together, Chris recognized this was not the same person heâd left behind at the quarry. He wiped away his tears and said angrily, âI might ask the same about you.â
Echohawk ignored the question. âSo did you find them?â
âOne found me. It ⦠she talked just like us. Thereâre actually quite humanlike.â
Chris was quite astounded that his friend showed no surprise by the fact that the Bigfoot could speak.
âSo you had your Bigfoot experience, what now?â Echohawk said sarcastically.
âWhatâs happened to you? Youâre not the same,â said Chris.
âI thought you were dead, chasing after those creatures. All I could think of was my grandfather and how they took him.â
âI donât think thatâs true. They wonât harm humans. They learned to stay out of our way, avoid us. Youâre not gonna believe this, but they may need our help.â
âDid it say how it wants our help?â
âShe liked the idea of getting Kesl to help them, it was almost like she knew who he was.â Then it came to Chris that Echohawk had not brought his gear. âWhereâs my stuff? Were you going to just leave me here?â
Echohawk pulled out his 1911 Colt and pointed it at Chris. âWorse than that?â
âI thought we were friends.â
âWeâre not enemies. Just on different sides,â said Echohawk. His finger tightened on the trigger and Chris flinched, ready to throw himself to the side. But he didnât have to. A split second later the Potawatomiâs face froze and he begin to shake all over. The gun slipped from his fingers. An instant later he lurched forward onto the ground. Then, almost out of the blue, another Bigfoot appeared. This one was much smaller, though she had the same proportion of limbs and torso. The face, however, could have passed for a bear.
âDid you do that?â Chris asked, his voice clear. It seemed almost natural to speak with a Bigfoot.
âYou were in danger.â
âCan all of you do that?â
âNo, we all have learned to do many different things. You are free to go now. Your phone is in his pocket.â
âIs he dead?
âWe donât kill humans.â
