Sitting in a hospital bed alone was incredibly boring. Daytime TV wasn’t much help, and the romance novel one of the nurses dropped off had me blushing within ten pages.

“Who’s ready to watch Love in Reality?” Blake popped her head into my room. The smell of pizza assaulted my nose, making me salivate on the spot.

“Oh my goodness, you’re my hero,” I said, my voice giddy. “Hospital food is awful.”

Lisa looked just as perfect as she had that morning. “It’s not all bad. The pudding is yummy.”

“You just think that because you’re pregnant,” Blake teased.

“Don’t worry, we’ll all be catching up on this season since we don’t have the time to get together as much anymore,” Lisa said, handing me a paper plate with a slice of gooey pepperoni pizza.

At least they’d made time this week.

The show started like always with the recap from the previous week.

“Ooh, I bet everyone hates her.” Blake pointed to the blonde on screen who talked like she was chewing bubble gum even when she wasn’t.

Sitting with my friends, enjoying pizza and bad reality TV without a care in the world like old times made me feel better than I had in months. I’d missed this.

“What is he doing?” I asked when he picked bubble gum girl in the elimination ceremony. “He can’t pick her. She’s so terrible.”

Both Blake and Lisa agreed, adding their own comments.

“Next week on Love in Reality,” the host said, “we will go to a private beach resort . . .”

The TV flashed to the women in string bikinis, a couple of them blurred because they were so inappropriate.

A gasp from the doorway turned our heads.

Judy.

Her eyes were glued to the TV.

Lisa clicked it off. “Hello, Judy. It’s nice of you to visit.”

“I thought she wasn’t going to watch that show anymore.” Judy plopped her green potted plant on the table next to me. “I thought you weren’t going to watch that show anymore.”

“I’m sorry, Judy, I don’t know if you were informed, but Clara has amnesia,” Blake said her tone on the verge of condescension.

“Oh, I heard.” She walked closer and got right in my face. “Is that true?” Her breath smelled like the church’s coffee. They must have had an emergency board meeting tonight.

“Yes,” I said. “Judy, is it?”

She straightened up. “I’m one of the board member’s wives.”

“Our board members have multiple wives?” I asked. “I guess I never asked what kind of church we started when Devon was here.”

Blake snorted. Lisa turned her head to look out the window at the dark sky.

“Of course not,” Judy said flustered. “I meant I am married to one of the board members. I am his only wife. And as for you, I would have expected you to get your memories back by now. You seem perfectly okay.”

“Just some stitches,” I said. “But this darn brain of mine won’t let me remember the last few years.”

“So you’re not going to go door-to-door with me this week?”

I shook my head.

“Not leading bible study?”

I shrugged.
