“Harvey, can you come in here?”

A moment later, my assistant, Harvey materialized in the doorway with a tablet held in his hand. He pushed his glasses up his nose and at my signal stepped in, an expectant look on his face.

“I need you to push back the meeting with La Rouge till tomorrow,” I began, twisting to face him in my chair. “And I need you to schedule a meeting with the board for later this week.”

Harvey nodded, his fingers moving steadily over the tablet. “Is there a particular date that you had in mind, Mr. Holt?”

I shook my head. “No but make sure it’s earlier in the morning if you can.”

“Understood, sir.”

I sat up straighter and leaned over my desk. “Have we heard back from the McIntyres?”

Harvey glanced up and frowned. “No, sir. I’ve left several messages with Howard McIntyre’s assistant.”

“Leave more,” I instructed, after a brief pause. “Make sure they know it’s urgent.”

It had only been two days since Meghan’s departure, and I was already worried . Although I tried to push away all thoughts of her, I couldn’t stop imagining her out there with a target on her back, and I couldn’t shake off the guilt that settled in the pit of my stomach.

Or the feeling that I shouldn’t have let Serena bully me into sending Meghan away.

Granted, it made things easier for everyone with Meghan gone, and things were a lot less complicated, but I missed her. I missed the furrow between her brows when she disagreed with someone, and I missed the way she chewed on her bottom lip when she was focused.

And I didn’t want to.

I didn’t want to miss any part of her, much less the things that annoyed me.

Distance was exactly what the two of us needed, and it gave me the chance I wanted to get my head on straight. In time, I hoped that our night in the elevator would fade to the back of my mind altogether. Unfortunately, until that time came, I kept reliving our night together and imagining what it would be like to be with her again.

The thought kept me up at night so I was tossing and turning and thinking of her.

And it stayed on my mind throughout the day when I was meant to be focusing on business.

Harvey looked back up at me, a solemn expression on his face. “Right away, Mr. Holt.”

Knowing that Meghan was thousands of miles away, in another state was hard, but it was harder knowing that I had eventually given in against my gut and allowed her to go. Over the past few days, I had tried to ignore the bad feeling in the center of my stomach and chalked it up to guilt.

I had, after all, slept with my sister’s best friends and hadn’t made amends.

While Serena hadn’t brought it up again, I could see it in her eyes whenever she looked at me, and I knew it was only a matter of time before it came up again.
