Tradition Criticism

The Stages behind the Text

All cultures have traditions that are passed from one generation to the next. Such traditions give expression to peoples’ self-understanding, their sense of their past, their systems of belief, and their codes of conduct. Subgroups within a society may even have their own special traditions. These traditions are passed down in many different forms, including stories, sayings, songs, poems, confessions, and creeds. Tradition criticism is concerned with the nature of these traditions and how they are used in a community’s history.
