Eranna stepped over the shriveled and withered corpse, purposely avoiding the warped expression of terror on the deceased girl’s face as she walked over to her mirror. For days, she’d been asking it the same question she always did … and for days, the answer had been increasingly distressing. Never had Eranna felt such a grip of terror and panic, and now there was only one thing left to do.
As she met her reflection, she silently questioned the mirror’s answers. How could there be another in Fallada fairer than she? With the help of Dra’kim’eyz, she’d managed to turn the clock back several decades, and had never looked more ravishing. It just didn’t make sense.
“Mirror, mirror,” she chanted, her eyes narrowed as if daring the mirror to disappoint her once again, “on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”
The familiar dance of light and color swirled within the glass, and when it cleared Eranna felt cold fingers of fury creeping up her spine. Ice spread on the ground beneath her feet and her breath turned white on the air as she released the anger in a flurry of wind and snow. Within the mirror was an image of a girl … the same girl the mirror had been showing her for days. She now rode on horseback with an Elf, her smile wide and violet eyes gleaming with happiness as they thundered across the green fields of Fallada toward Inador. Ribbons of wheat-colored hair flew out behind them like a banner, streaming wildly like the trail of a shooting star.
“No!” she bellowed, slamming her clenched fists into the mirror. The glass cracked and shattered, slicing into the skin of her palms viciously. Eranna welcomed the pain as she turned her back on the now empty frame, the red glow of her eyes casting a demonic haze over the room. Ice climbed up the walls toward the ceiling, but somehow the room just could not get cold enough to squelch the heat of her rage. Blood trickled from her hands and she closed the wounds with her thoughts before stomping over to the basin of water on her washstand. As she dried her hands, the red glow of her eyes slowly subsided and her breathing slowed.
With a swish of her black robes, Eranna stalked back to the other side of the room. She lifted the shards of glass from the floor with a flick of her wrist, bringing them back together seamlessly before commanding them back into the gilded frame. Turning to face its empty reflection once more, she conjured up the image of Dra’kim’eyz in the Delelm mountains.
“Your Majesty,” the Witch greeted her with a bow. The power of the mirror had summoned her image as well as her attention, as she’d wished. “How can I be of service?”
“Get here. Now,” she spat, turning her back on the mirror before receiving a response. The Witch wouldn’t dare defy her.
When she turned, it was to find Enrak standing in
