The purpose of the camp is to demonstrate the Christian life in the world of sport

Talented young men and women in their late teens and early twenties provide role model examples during the week in a variety of ways:

All leaders and coaches meet for a weekend of training before the young people arrive on the Sunday afternoon. This serves to give a great balance to the camp since these leaders are both receiving as well as giving in the camp situation.

The early morning run sees a full camp turn out (250–300) with the team leaders and coaches running alongside the athletes.

A quality warm down and stretching session is followed by a 5-minute testimony from one of the leaders.

The after breakfast team meeting is an exciting mixture of sports video footage, lively worship songs, pulsating quizzes, interviews and brief but interesting talks, all of which communicate to the athletes the challenging adventure of being a Christian.

The morning coaching sessions work the athletes hard and always include a devotional break in the middle. This provides a sports value moment for the coach who may choose to look from a Christian perspective at such areas as teamwork, leadership, winning with humility, losing with dignity and persistence. The athletes themselves will also be given an opportunity to share how God is working in their lives. The afternoon coaching sessions would follow along similar lines.

The daily Team Challenge competition gives the leaders many opportunities to stress and develop Christian character in their respective teams. Seven-minute games of halo, non-stop cricket, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, rugby/netball and football, for example, contribute to a junior and senior league and help to bind both team and leaders together. The leaders don’t take part in these games but spend all their time on the touchline encouraging and supporting their charges. All games are concluded with both teams forming a huddle for a prayer together. Prayers every 7 minutes on the sports field . . . now there’s a revolutionary concept!

Free time before the evening meal often finds the athletes and leaders trying their hand at different sports and developing friendships.

The evening meeting is a magazine-style programme aimed right at the heart of youth sports culture with state of the art technology. Loud music, sporting clips from well-known films, on-stage challenging competitions and thought-provoking talks. This is followed by a time in dormitories for all athletes and their leaders in order to study the Bible and discuss the theme of the day, as well as the major point from the evening talk. These times have seen many young athletes give their lives to Christ over the years.

During the dormitory times, the coaches gather to have their own time together. As well as sharing their experiences of the day, they also pray for the many teams as they meet to discuss the claims of Christ on their lives. The desire of the coaches is not merely to be Christian coaches but to learn together how they might coach ‘Christianly’.
