Develop Your Strengths
âEach personâs greatest room for growth is in the areas of his or her greatest strength.â
âDonald Clifton
ROBBIE SCHULDT STUDIED ADVERTISING at the Thunderbird School of Global Management. After graduating, she worked for a number of advertising agencies in New York City, where she met her husband. When he was transferred to northern Virginia just before they married, Robbie found another job in advertising in the Washington, D.C., area. It wasnât easy, but she managed to stay with the company when her husbandâs job moved them again, first to Atlanta and then to Detroit. She finally left that job after their daughter was born, but found another in less than a year.
Robbieâs husband, who works in the automotive industry, was then transferred to Japan. It didnât take Robbie long to find a marketing position with AT&T. They lived in Japan for a few years, and she learned a lot about the culture. When they moved yet again, this time to California, Robbie combined her knowledge of Japanese culture with the communication skills she had honed in the advertising world to give presentations to families moving to Japan. Disney was building a new amusement park in Tokyo, so she had plenty of work.
While she and her family were in California, Robbie had an accident and broke both of her ankles. As part of her rehabilitation, she started working out at a health club and discovered a love of fitness. While becoming certified as a fitness instructor, she heard about an opening in marketing for the fitness chain and became the regional marketing director.
A year later, Robbieâs husband was transferred back to Japan. Soon she was teaching fitness classes and making presentations about Japan via conference call to people around the world who were moving there. Robbie also continued to use her advertising skills as a marketing consultant for the Foreign Buyersâ Club, a food service company.
Robbie and her family returned to the United States for a few more years before moving to Seoul, South Korea. She is currently on the board of the Seoul International Womenâs Association and works to coordinate tours around Seoul for newcomers and visitors to learn about the city and its culture. She also continues to teach fitness classes. Despite the challenges of moving around the globe for her husbandâs job, Robbie has always found opportunities to develop her strengths in meaningful ways. Her diverse experiences helped her to discover and apply new strengths, too.
