âIâve never heard how you came to Christ, Robert,â Travis stated as he looked as his friend from across the table. He and Robert, Abby, and Beth were enjoying a rare âadults onlyâ evening out while Jack watched the kids.
âItâs not a very worthwhile story to tell.â
Travis shook his head. âAs long as you came to Christ, itâs worthwhile. It may be the most important story youâll ever tell.â
His friends smiled at him, loving the change they witnessed in Travis. His heart had truly become the Lordâs. He was growing in the Word every day and his spirit became softer with it.
âWell,â Robert said. âI grew up in the church, and so I always had the Word around me. At the age of seven, my mom was reading the Bible to me and I asked her how I could get to heaven. She told me and right then and there, I asked Jesus into my heart. Now, it wasnât always easy. In fact, at times it was really hard. I didnât firmly grasp it all until I was about 13, when I rededicated my life to Him. It was still difficult, but then I met this amazing girl in college who loved the Lord with all her heart, and that really helped keep me in line.â He turned to look at his wife. âOh, wow! Here she is, now!â He kissed Bethâs cheek, and she hugged him tightly, glowing with happiness.
âAbs, youâre up.â
Abby looked at Travis with guarded eyes. âOh, Trav, you donât want to hear about that. At least not right now. Itâs not a happy story, and I donât want to ruin the wonderful meal.â
Travis tugged lightly on her hair. âCome on, Abs.â
âTravis, seriously. Not here, okay?â
He looked at Beth, who carefully averted her eyes from Travis, and then to Robert, who shrugged. They then changed the topic to relieve the tension, but Abbyâs look remained secretive until she got to Travisâ house. Robert and Beth went in to get their children, and Travis started to do the same.
âTravis?â Abby called hesitantly. He turned. âWould you like to talk now?â
Travisâ eyebrows rose, and then he looked around at the frostbitten trees. âOut here? In this freezing cold?â
Abby shrugged. âWherever. I do want to tell you, itâs just that Iâd rather it be privateâ¦you know. Besides, Beth and Robert have heard this story before.â
He nodded understandingly. âTell you what - how about I go say goodnight to Celia, and then we can have a cup of hot chocolate and talk while sitting downstairs? That way weâll be warm, comfortable, and have our privacy.â
She nodded and got out of the car to walk beside him into the warmth of the house. Beth and Robert came out just then with their two children following sleepily behind. Beth gave Abby a hug as they crossed paths. âDonât be afraid to tell him. Heâs not going to reject you.â She saw Beth cringe slightly.
âAre you okay?â Abby asked with concern.
âYeah,â Beth shook her head and took a slow deep breath.
