Chapter Twenty-three

Billy Danvers

Billy had always been a logical man, a man of facts and reasoning. But this place? This radiant, expansive void was beyond comprehension. The ever-present white lights, soft yet intense, cast no shadows. They danced and merged, each one indistinguishable from the other.

Initially, he had dismissed the experience as a hallucination, possibly induced by a hidden trauma or some stray drug he had ingested. But as the minutes turned to hours, the permanence of his situation became evident.

It was like he was stuck in a dream that he couldn’t wake up from. An eternal purgatory of his own mind. He would have thought he was dead except for the nagging sensation of hunger and a parched throat.

As Billy staggered forward, his movements were sluggish. His senses, dulled, provided little feedback. Time and again, he'd reach out to touch the tantalizing lights, hoping to grasp something solid. Every time, his hands would sweep through emptiness.

Hunger gnawed at his insides; the sensation more pronounced in the suffocating silence of the bright environment.

The ground beneath was peculiar. It wasn’t solid, yet it supported his weight. It wasn't wet, yet when he sank to his knees, it absorbed into his skin. Finally, when his thirst could no longer be ignored, he lay flat on his stomach, pressing his parched lips against it.

The water, if it could be called that, was odd—neither cold nor warm. It lacked taste but quenched his thirst. Perhaps, Billy thought, the ground itself was a manifestation of his desperation, providing the very sustenance he so desperately craved.

The thought made him spring back to his feet. It was the internal ramblings of a lunatic. Spaces didn’t give what people needed. If they did, a hamburger would have appeared ages ago.

He chuckled at the idea of a hamburger appearing in his hand. Then closed his eyes and held his palm out. After a few seconds, he snuck a peek. Nothing had changed.

Relief washed over him at the result. At least he wasn’t dead. Billy experienced a rush of newfound energy. Focusing on the closer bright spot, he trudged toward it.

But it remained a strange mirage. There was no mass to the object, no heat. It was nothing. Panic began to claw at the edges of his mind. His breathing grew rapid, and his heartbeat thundered in his ears.

“No!” he screamed, frustration bubbling to the surface. “Where am I?”

His voice, despite its volume, echoed back to him. He yelled out in frustration, kicking the strange water as he did. When that didn’t satiate his anger, he ripped his shirt off and threw it at the light, still screaming.

A movement caught his eye, but as quickly as it came, he lost track of it. “Hello?”

Nothing responded, and his hands went to his head.

Drained, he once again collapsed to the floor, drawing more of the room-temperature liquid into his mouth and trying to calm his racing heart.

Lying there, Billy had a moment of clarity. Perhaps this wasn’t about the lights at all. Maybe the answers he sought weren’t external but were somewhere deep within him.
