As the car came to a stop, and Ricky Ito got out to open their doors, Michael couldn’t stop thinking about Jenny and her drawings. There has to be some way to capture her incredible talent. I will figure out something… he thought.
Chapter Fifteen: Cherries Aren’t The Only Things That Blossom In Japan
Michael and Melissa walked into their room at the Hotel Kurama Onsen, and although it was late, the table was set with a light meal. As they kneeled on the tatami mat, sipping tea and cherry wine, and drinking miso soup, they reflected on the day and how the dynamics between men and women were so different here than at home.
“Always before when I thought of gender relations in Eastern cultures, I thought of them as sexist,” Melissa said as she sipped her wine. “But in the time I’ve been here, I have grown to see a grace and beauty in the difference between men and women.”
“I know what you mean. I grew up in California, and although my mother was a stay at home Mom, she was always a feminist. I was raised to see women as equal to men. So, when I came here, I wasn’t sure how to take the differences between men and women. Like you, I saw it as sexist.”
“But there is a difference between something being different and being unequal,” Melissa added. “Jenny is different because she is autistic. But does that make her ‘less than’ other people? I don’t think so.”
“Right. Just as we learned that many Geishas are placed on that path as young girls, Jenny didn’t choose her path. It’s a bit arrogant of people to think that just because someone is different than they are, that there is anything wrong with them.”
“Exactly!” Melissa said passionately. “Geishas have more power than many other women in this society. Many people in our culture don’t see that people on the autism spectrum have value and, yes, power. They are seen as ‘disabled’.”
Taking a deep breath, Melissa could tell that the wine and fatigue were going to her head. Between the train ride, the onsen, the dinner with the Geishas and now this deep conversation with Michael, Melissa’s head was spinning.
“I will be right back. I need to use the little girls’ room.” She giggled a bit at the use of the diminutive term when they were just talking about female empowerment.
