CHAPTER 13
My gaze lingered on my sonâs stricken face, and I would have given anything to shield him from the pain etched across it. The weight of his anguish stifled the air, a burden I never wanted him to bear. My maternal instinct ached to ease the hurt and protect him from the harsh realities that came with hunter life.
Darynâs hand slipped to my shoulder, a silent gesture that spoke through our shared bond. I could feel the undercurrent of regret coursing through him, mirroring the depth of my own sorrow. In that moment, our connection transcended our emotions. It was a unique understanding of the helplessness we felt in the face of our loved onesâ suffering.
As Sphinx swatted at diner chairs and growled with displeasure, I sensed the intertwined energies that bound her to my son. Calebâs anger fueled hers, an inseparable connection that enslaved their emotions into a tapestry of shared trauma.
The air was thick with a mix of regret and frustration. Despite the supernatural forces at play, the pain etched on Calebâs face reminded me of the very human vulnerability that bound us together. In this moment of shared anguish, I yearned for the strength to ease his suffering in the face of my failure.
Caleb focused on Len, and a wheezing sound exited Lenâs lips as he stared at his son.
âStop it, Shannon,â Daryn said.
âItâs not me. Itâs Caleb. He called his father.â Pain had always been a great power inducer, and it didnât get much worse than losing your father in the most gruesome way imaginable.
Lenâs face scrunched. But it wasnât my pain. âSon, I am so sorry. I wasnât who I needed to be for you or your mother. Itâs all clear to me now.â
Calebâs lip quivered. âThis isnât on you. I should have protected you. Thatâs what I was training for. To protect the innocent.â
âProtect your mother. Especially now. She is the most important person in the world. I am proud of you.â The breath rushed from his lips in a rush, and I knew Caleb had lost the connection. His necro powers were in their infancy, but he would be very powerful once he was properly trained.
âNo!â Caleb yelled as Sphinx growled and pushed over a dinner table.
Daryn dropped his hand from my shoulder. âCaleb, I understand your anger. I know what you are going through, but we are in a mundane diner. I have temporary wards to stop the mundanes from entering, but they wonât stop Sphinx from breaking out if you lose control. Rein her in, buddy.â
Caleb stared at his father, then put his hand out. Sphinx immediately went to him and resumed her domestic form. He stood with his cat licking his face and turned away from us.
My hand reached out involuntarily. âHoney, Iâm sorry. I havenât fully recovered from healing Kaine. And my power doesnât work the same on mundanes.â
Caleb turned as a tear slipped from his eye. âThis isnât on you. I was sitting across from him.â He stared at me with so much pain in his eyes, my chest squeezed.
