suddenly opens up, marking the upper end of Lower La Barge Box. This is the turnaround point for our hike.

Canyon Lake forms the scenic backdrop during the hike up the first section of La Barge Trail.

Miles and Directions

0.0 Begin at Canyon Lake Trailhead.

0.4 Spur trail junction; continue on main trail.

0.9 Cross ridgetop.

2.4 La Barge Creek; leave trail and hike cross-country up La Barge Creek.

5.5 Arrive at Lower La Barge Box.

11.0 Return to trailhead.

Option

For a much shorter and easier hike, take the unsigned spur trail near the beginning of the Boulder Canyon Trail. This trail ends in the bed of lower La Barge Creek, not too far from Canyon Lake. The round-trip hike is 3.0 miles.

INSIDE THE BOX

A box canyon is a canyon that has a narrow section bounded by tall cliffs and generally some obstacle in the bed that makes it difficult to traverse, especially on horseback. Sometimes the obstacle is a high, dry waterfall, or as in the case of Lower La Barge Box, the canyon floor may be choked with boulders. Obviously, a box canyon is not the place to be during a flash flood.
