Animal and bird parks. Gran Canaria: Palmitos Park, close to Playa del Inglés/Maspalomas, has parrots, monkeys, deer, dolphins and crocodiles; (daily 10am–6pm; www.palmitospark.es). Tenerife: Loro Parque, Puerto de la Cruz (daily 8.30am–6.45pm; www.loroparque.com), has an aquarium, dolphin and sea lion shows, as well as parrots (for more information, click here); Jungle Park (10am–5.30pm; www.junglepark.es), at Los Cristianos, has an eagle show, many other birds and animals, and the Jungle Raid obstacle course. Lanzarote: Lanzarote Aquarium (daily 10am–6pm; www.aquariumlanzarote.com); Las Pardelas Recreational Park (daily 10am–6pm, http://pardelas-park.com), at Guinate, has a farm with domestic animals and donkey rides.

Water and leisure parks. Gran Canaria: Aqualand Maspalomas (daily 10am–5pm; tel: 928 140 525; www.aqualand.es), near Playa del Inglés, is the Canaries’ biggest; Lago Oasis Waterpark (daily 10am–6pm, http://lagotaurito.es) in Mogán is another winner. Lanzarote: Water Park Costa Teguise (http://aquaparklanzarote.es) is the island’s best. Tenerife: Aqualand Costa Adeje (daily 10am–6pm, winter 10am–5pm; www.aqualand.es) in Costa Adeje is a waterpark with a dolphinarium.
