Es Migjorn Gran, Sant Tomàs and Son Bou

Head back to Ferreries now, and turn right just before you enter the town. The curvy road runs 6km (4 miles) through lush, fertile landscape, limestone rock faces and well-cultivated terraces to Es Migjorn Gran ( [map]. This sleepy town, built by the Spanish in the 18th century, has a meandering Carrer Major, lined with spick-and-span, dark-shuttered houses. There is not much here to detain you but, as well as being the starting point for an energetic walk down the Barranc de Binigaus to the sea (about 5km/3 miles each way), it also has one of the best restaurants on the island, S’Engolidor (for more information, click here).

It’s only about 5km (3 miles) down the road from the town to Sant Tomàs, a pleasant but undistinguished resort that originally grew up here because the beaches were long, broad and splendid. They have been helped by a bit of artifice in recent years, however: in 1989 a freak storm made off with all the sand and the crisp white powder you walk through today had to be imported.
