Masaccio’s Adam and Eve in the Brancacci Chapel

Santa Maria del Carmine

Further west is the unpretentious church of Santa Maria del Carmine (Mon–Tue, Thu–Fri 9am–noon, Wed and Sat 10am–noon, Sun 9–9.45am, 11–11.45am). The church houses some seminal Renaissance frescoes commissioned by the wealthy merchant Felice Brancacci. From 1425–27, a young Masaccio and his teacher Masolino worked on the decorations of the Cappella Brancacci º [map] (tel: 055-276 8224; Mon and Wed–Sat 10am–5pm, Sun 1–5pm; maximum of 30 visitors are allowed in at one time, for only 15 minutes, reservations advised in high season; charge) at the end of the right transept. Masolino’s own work is striking enough, but Masaccio’s The Tribute Money and The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden raised the art of painting to an unprecedented level. His feeling for light and space, his dramatic stage-set figures, and the solidity of their forms were considered little short of an inspired miracle. Their creation heralded the arrival of the Renaissance, where nothing like them had been painted before. Sadly, Masaccio died at the age of 27, in 1428.
