Featuring GRAHAM STARK, PRISCILLA MORGAN, NIGEL GREEN, EILEEN WAY, CAMERON HALL, PATSY SMART, PETER VERNON, RONNIE BRODY. Script: Dave Freeman. Incidental music: Ron Grainer. Designer: Robert MacGowan. Producer: Duncan Wood. In the first show of series two, billed as ‘a new series of unlikely situations’, Hill stars as a nervous, foolhardy newspaper reporter who cheerfully wanders into spooky, haunted house comedy territory with death threats, curses and Graham Stark’s deliciously creepy old family retainer.
Benny Hill, ‘Cry of Innocence’: BBC, Friday 7 December 1962, 8.50–9.15 p.m. Starring BENNY HILL. Featuring JOHN GABRIEL, AMBROSINE PHILLPOTTS, JOAN NEWELL, ROGER AVON, YOOTHA JOYCE, ARTHUR MULLARD, GORDON PHILLOTT, HOWARD DOUGLAS, ANN LANCASTER, JOAN INGRAM, RONNIE BRODY, PATSY SMART, JENNIFER BROWNE, ROBERT RAGLEN, WILLIAM SHERWOOD, MICHAEL STAINTON, REG THOMPSON, MICHAEL EARL. Script: Dave Freeman. Incidental music: Ron Grainer. Designer: Tony Abbott. Producer: Duncan Wood. In a wonderfully detailed spoof on Alfred Hitchcock’s vastly underrated documentary-style Henry Fonda flick The Wrong Man, Hill plays the much put upon and mentally troubled Godfrey Bellbine, continually arrested, for no apparent reason, by hard-nosed Detective Inspectors Jones (John Gabriel) and Williams (Roger Avon). A tight-knit, claustrophobic and bleakly played comedy of oppressive situation.
Benny Hill, ‘The Time Bicycle’: BBC, Friday 14 December 1962, 8.50–9.15 p.m. Starring BENNY HILL. Featuring GRAHAM STARK, ANTHONY SHARP, LAUREL MATHER, GWENDA EWEN, CAMERON HALL, KEN ROBERTS, JULIAN ORCHARD, MOLLY SUGDEN, EDWIN APPS, SIDNEY VIVIAN, REG THOMPSON, ROGER AVON, JEAN MARLOW, ALEC BREGONZI. Script: Dave Freeman. Incidental music: Ron Grainer. Designer: Robert MacGowan. Producer: Duncan Wood. A joyous H.G. Wells parody starring Benny as Mr Bottiwell, a cheerful Edwardian chap who, one fateful September afternoon in 1902, takes a trip to Hampstead to visit his inventor friend, Hadrian, played by Graham Stark. Notorious for his wacky ideas, he plies Hill with bucket-loads of sherry, straps him into a magical time-travelling bike and sends him into the future.
