Chapter Five

The next eight days were agony for Benlon. Nothing he tried seemed to have any effect on anyone. Expiration syndrome claimed sixty-eight more victims and Olarra remained in a drug induced coma because every time he tried to reduce the level of sedation or wean her off the ventilator, she stopped breathing.

Leko was just as frustrated as Benlon. The nanobots responsible for the symptoms had managed to defend themselves against every form of attack or alteration. Subtle changes had no effect whatsoever, and anything more direct harmed the patient.

The two males stood in one of the research laboratories two levels up from main medical. The projected outcome of Leko’s latest simulation was death of the patient. “I don’t know what else to try,” Leko admitted, his expression revealing his helplessness. “A focused EMP is the obvious solution, but a pulse destructive enough to take out the culprits also destroys nanobots crucial to our existence.”

“There is a solution. We just haven’t found it yet.” Even as the words left Benlon’s mouth he heard how hollow the reassurance sounded.

After releasing a quiet sigh, Leko changed the subject. “Has anyone heard from the Dox Tory mission? Emrik should have had time to determine if the scientist is really willing to help us or not.”

“Vosic had yet to receive an update when I spoke with him a few hours ago.”

Leko nodded and sat down on one of the wheeled stools scattered about the lab. “You haven’t mentioned Olarra today. Is there any change in her condition?”

Benlon looked away, unable to face the pity he’d see in his friend’s eyes. “The deterioration is slow, but she is growing weaker. Like you, I do not know what else to try.”

“Did her father respond to your message?” When Benlon shook his head, Leko’s tone sharpened. “Do we need to fly down there and motivate him?”

“Vosic would never allow it, and we would likely end up in a Pylorian detainment cell.” That didn’t mean Benlon hadn’t considered it several times a day for the past week. “I’ll send another message. Let him know that she might not survive without his intervention.”

“Her mother was Dox Tory,” Leko pointed out. “Maybe the scientist Altizar lined up can help her too.”

Benlon swore under his breath, a small release for his frustration. “I don’t want to hang my hopes on a stranger half a galaxy away. We should be able to solve this ourselves.”

“I agree, but I’m to the point that I’ll accept help from anyone if it reverses the course we’re on right now.”

Energized by Leko’s simple statement, Benlon signed out a shuttle and headed to Earth twenty minutes later. He had combed through the research material three times to no avail. Maybe knowing Olarra was out of danger would put him in a better frame of mind to find a solution for expiration syndrome.

He didn’t know if Olarra’s father would agree to see him, but it was the only avenue he had not exhausted yet. Governor Kreth loved his daughter and had defied the other councilors in the past to serve his purposes.
