CHAPTER 9
Benjar awoke with a pounding head and a throbbing ache in his leg. Every muscle in his body felt limp and exhausted. Well, almost every muscle. His cock had fully emerged from its sheath, rock hard and throbbing with an entirely different kind of ache. It was currently nestled between the soft mounds of Rubyâs ass and despite his other aches and pains, heâd never felt more content.
Sheâd stayed with him.
Most of the previous day - and night, he amended â was a blur of pain and heat, but he remembered that she had been there. He remembered her voice talking to him, her cooling touch on his brow, and satisfying his thirst. He had another kind of thirst now and he couldnât resist rocking his hips gently against her, groaning silently as his cock slipped back and forth between her buttocks. For a moment, she seemed to push back against him, then she yelped and scrambled out of the bed, knocking against his wounded leg in the process. It was his turn to yelp.
She gave him an angry look. âYou promised me you wouldnât do anything I didnât want you to do.â
âI wasnât doing anything.â
His voice came out hoarse and strained, but she didnât stop glaring at him. She really had the most enchanting scowl.
âThen what do you call that?â
âJust a normal physical reaction.â
He tried to flash her his usual grin, but a wave of weakness swept over him. Her gaze sharpened.
âWhatâs the matter?â
âItâs the fever.â
âDo you need a cold towel?â
In spite of the tremors that seized his body, the worry on her face comforted him. Perhaps she was beginning to care for him as well.
âYes,â he admitted.
He sank back against the pillows, and a moment later an icy cloth covered his brow. He shivered, then sighed with relief.
âI thought your fever had broken.â
He forced his eyes open and saw her worried face hovering over him. Why was that wrinkle between her brows so adorable, he wondered absently.
âItâs not adorable,â she said, a rush of pink tinting her cheeks, and he realized he had spoken out loud.
Fuck. This wasnât good.
âThe fever heals, but it also takes a toll on the body.â He tried to think, to remember what he needed to tell her. âBetter to stay away from me. I might hurt you accidentally.â
âDonât be silly. You always calm down when you hear my voice.â
His eyes were starting to close again, but he smiled.
âThatâs because youâre my mate.â
He thought he heard her sigh as he drifted off again. The healing fever was how his people had recovered from their injuries before the advent of modern medical technology. Heâd gone through it several times when he was young and without resources.
The first time heâd experienced the fever was when he was injured trying to defend his painstakingly gathered meal from a much larger and older male. He remembered little of the actual fever, but somehow heâd managed to crawl into a culvert small enough to evade the larger predators who hunted the streets.
