CHAPTER 8

THE MOVE DOWN TO THE PRE-IMPACT POSITION

Hogan’s right elbow returned to his right side and acted like a strut to drive the right forearm and hand to the ball and into impact—time after time after time. This foundation creates a platform easy to assume, and steady by nature. Your shot-making reliability derives from a good barstool position.

The golfer who does not settle into the barstool position misses out on timing into the impact zone and invariably “hits from the top.” The patience to settle into this key position can be learned. Watch Tiger a few times. You will see the settling, and then the body ripping the club through the ball at a very fast rate.

When the launching platform has been achieved, the right hand and forearm have one simple purpose: to hold the clubhead firmly on its track into the back of the ball with an arched hand as the upper body turns through the ball toward the target.
