Chapter 8
The homeless manâs interview was an instant hit. A video of his performance went viral with millions of views on social media sites. The media started referring to the X-Ray vision event as the comet virus. However, skeleton dance resonated with the young people, and the homeless man became such an overnight sensation that a generous attorney helped him apply for a trademark so he could monetize his popular, new catchphrase. Hats and T-shirts adorned with skeleton dance in unique fonts and colors quickly popped up in every store around the USA.
Two and a half weeks after the comet virus impacted the global population, most people accepted their new X-Ray style vision. Many returned to regular responsibilities and routines to lead as normal a life as possible while continually surrounded by skeletons.
Daveâs life was anything but ordinary without Megan. He couldnât figure out how the turn on the new dishwasher, so he had to wash dishes by hand. Megan preferred to wash sheets, towels and clothes every Monday, so Dave tried to stay on schedule. He was awake until midnight trying to fold the last set of fitted sheets. When Scout threw up in the kitchen, Dave had to deal with the messâsomething heâd seen Megan do many times without issue. Dave gagged at the smell and nearly lost his lunch himself. More than the household chores, he missed Meganâs gentle touch and warm smile that still made his heart flutter six years after they first met. Daveâs appreciation for Megan grew every minute she was away. Each day, he continued to add to his âWhat I love about Meganâ list.
One of the biggest challenges during the comet virus was identifying people who were not close friends or family, without visible skin, muscles, or hair. This was especially challenging for the teachers and staff at the schools with dozens of students in each classroom sporting similar femurs, scapulas, and skulls.
Dave observed the exposed bones of students roaming the halls and quickly developed effective identification skills because of his surveillance. Distinct traits like height and voice were the easiest attributes to identify students, resulting in the accurate identification of about a third of the skeletons wandering the high school hallways.
Dave guessed he could identify another third of the students by the style of clothes they wore and the friends they were hanging around. Heâd never considered before how much high schoolers dress and act like their friends.
Last, he learned to identify the rest of the students and staff by their gait. It amazed Dave at how much of a personal signature one leaves when walking. He observed kids who would shuffle their feet, bounce with each step, walk with their feet pointed outward, march, take long strides, take short choppy steps, and even waddle like a large duck. Soon, Dave could accurately identify students and staff by a simple stroll down the hall about ninety percent of the time.
Dave also noticed dramatic behavior changes throughout the student body. Team captains
