THE ANTWERP SIX

In the late 1980s, daring, provocative yet wide-ranging shows in London and Paris launched the reputations of half a dozen fashion graduates from Antwerp’s Royal Academy (www.antwerp-fashion.be). They’ve since become known internationally as the ‘Antwerp Six’. The group’s most commercially prominent figurehead is Dries Van Noten, whose colourful bohemian clothes sell worldwide. Conceptual-artist-cum-designer Walter Van Beirendonck (www.waltervanbeirendonck.com) has created outfits for rock supergroup U2, and merges wild and futuristic clubwear with postmodern ideas about everything from biotechnology to aliens. See his collections at Walter, which also features soft women’s wear by Dirk Van Saene.

Now Germany based, Dirk Bikkemberg launched the first fashion-house-designed football boot in 2006 (the €320 kangaroo-leather ‘Bix’). In Antwerp find his designs at Verso.

Ann Demeulemeester’s timeless designs favour monochromes – often black – while Marina Yee is known for ‘reconstructing’ garments out of secondhand ware.

True to surrealist expectations the Antwerp six are actually seven. That’s if you include ‘unofficial’ member Martin Margiela, whose very wearable, back-to-school-look fashions are displayed in his whitewashed, unsigned Brussels boutique Click here.
