By 1960 it all came to an end with government protection laws. Ivo had finished school and began work in a fast-changing Italy. An uncle, who fathered only daughters who could not inherit, bequeathed family artefacts and memorabilia to Ivo, whose personal collection grew, and so did his interest in antiquity. He became a school teacher, but that did not go well because Ivo cancelled lessons and set the kids into squads – armies – and the classroom erupted in a daily battle. So he changed career, and went to work as an administrator at the hospital, next to the church of San Francesco. This church fascinated Ivo because he had never forgotten that, when he was a boy of ten, news arrived at school that the floor of the sacristy of San Francesco had caved in and as soon as the bell rang and school was out, morbidly captivated, he raced over to stare at ghoulish mummified corpses. He remembers well the hands of a defunct crossed on his chest, bones sticking out of cloth wrappings and his head bent at an awkward angle because when the floor collapsed it broke everything apart. Years later, with time on his hands as the administrator of the hospital, Ivo began to study wills and testaments and found records of deaths, and a plan of privileged burials in the ossuary under San Francesco. Not able to devastate the whole floor, which has never been excavated, Ivo and a friend decided that, on their next free day, they would excavate the sacristy – where the floor had fallen in when they were kids.

‘But Isabella,’ Ivo went on, ‘before I tell you what happened, you must understand that I am a believer in reincarnation of the soul. This is the third time I have been on this earth. I was alive during the Republic of Rome – although I have an aversion to the Romans and would have preferred to have been here earlier because it was aggressive Romans who destroyed the Etruscans. But I know that I came back a second time: in the medieval period I was a minstrel. I am now in my third spiritual and earthly body. I am telling you this so you will understand why I believe it is true, because the night before we decided to pull up the slabs, in a dream, I visualized myself buried in a peculiar way. Well, we heaved up the stone flags and we did not have to look far before we found two mummified corpses on a timber pallet. We pushed away the debris and unwrapped the first body. He was dressed in a Franciscan robe; fragments of cloth were intact and bits of leather and rope from his cincture were still there, so we knew he was a Frate, a friar. But, in the same box was a woman who wore a beautiful lace dress and a celestial blue corset! I will never forget this; it was the moment which confirmed my belief in my own reincarnation.
