Conclusion
In the present chapter we have explored aspects of human embodiment, one of the implications of a theology of humanity that we have traced from the concept of the âimage of God,â as well as from the Old Testament evidence about Israelâs basic concepts of the human constitution. Embodiment applied not only to the individual but also to the âsocial bodyâ and to the ways in which the one related to the other. In that context we have pursued here the topics of placedness and memory and found them to be important factors in the Old Testamentâs expression of the human condition and experience. We have also observed connections between the topics and the pervasive theme of transformation. Regarding place, humans do not simply occupy space but impart to it a certain character by virtue of the way in which they occupy it, a character that has much to do with the quality of human relating in it, and the ways in which humans relate to the earth itself. Similar factors emerge in the context of the ways in which identity is expressed through commemorative acts. The two topics converged in regard to matters of practical justice. Place and memory, therefore, are not simply static factors in human experience, but have aspects of both givenness (âGod gave us this landâ) and the most profound challenge to responsible thought and action.
We turn next to a further topic under the rubric of âembodiment,â namely, politics.
