EDGAR AND JACK ROLL
EDGAR SAT DOWN, gazing at the screen of his smartphone. Jack waited, expecting Edgar to look up when he’d finished. Instead, Edgar continued to scroll through his text messages.
After a couple of seconds, Jack spoke up. “Got something blowing up in Risk Management today, Edgar?”
Edgar looked up at his boss, disconcerted. “Uh, no. Actually, I was getting caught up on all the work I left hanging by coming to this meeting—now it looks like we aren’t even having the team meeting.”
Jack was immediately irritated, and he was not sure how to read Edgar. Taking a breath to gather himself, he spoke calmly, but with some energy in his voice. “How about we get started with our peer coaching, Edgar, like Jordan just asked us to do. After all, I wasn’t excluding myself when I said I was disappointed in how we are functioning as a leadership team. I am trusting that what she is asking us to do will help each of us and all of us together.”
Chastened, Edgar set down his phone. “Okay, Jack. What do you have in mind?”
“Why don’t you start by telling me your leadership strengths, the ones you shared with Jordan, and your own goal for this team coaching?” Jack asked.
Edgar picked up his phone again, then glanced at Jack and reassured him, “I’m just pulling up the notes I made for myself. Here we go. For my goal, I’ve got ‘Figure out how to get everyone in the risk department on the same page.’ I’m thinking about some processes and procedures that will ensure no one goes off the page. Then for my strengths I put down ‘risk reduction business and legal expertise; directness; consistency.’” He looked up again. “How about you?”
Jack smiled. “Not so fast, Edgar. I want to understand what you’re saying. You said your leadership goal is to get everyone in Risk Management on the same page. I get why that’s important to you. But what’s your goal for yourself as a leader? You’re new to this role, and I have to believe you’ve got some things you want to develop in yourself as a leader. That goal sounds like it’s more about them than you.”
“Yeah, Jordan asked me pretty much the same thing. But to be honest with you, Jack, I’m right where I want to be. You just promoted me, and that’s the goal I’ve been working toward: Chief Risk Officer. So now I want to do the job, and I want to do it well. It seems like first things first: get everyone on the same page so we anticipate and manage Tech Environments’ risks.”
“Okay, then, let me ask you a different question. What does your team think about this? Are they all on board with the risk strategy you have outlined?”
“Uh, no, not yet,” Edgar said, clearing his throat. “There might be a couple who we end up letting go if they can’t get on board. But I haven’t made any decisions about that yet.
