THE RESPECTABLE HOUSEHOLD

Sixteen years after Caroline’s death, and seven years after the death of her unlovely husband George IV, an open carriage accompanied by outriders in royal livery drew up at the grand entrance to the Duchess of Kent’s apartments at Kensington Palace. Almost immediately a small, slight figure of a girl was seen being helped into the landau, followed by two older women—the girl’s mother and her German governess. A line of mounted lancers on Palace Green held back the cheering crowds as the small procession made its way through Hyde Park and along Constitution Hill before passing under the Marble Arch into the great courtyard of Buckingham Palace.

The eighteen-year-old Queen Victoria was moving house.
