Chapter 15

The man motioned to his allies, who then pulled the slides back on their weapons, chambering a round. Sandra cried out, “Please, Hunter, tell them what they need to know! They are going to kill us and you if you don’t!” Just then the shots rang out. Sanda and her family fell dead on the ground.

Hunter dropped down next to Sandra, tears cascading down his face like a relentless river, soaking his skin with raw emotion. He was in shock at what had just happened, trembling in fear as he reached over and closed her eyes. Looking around at the other bodies slumped on the floor, Hunter willed himself not to cry any further but it was too late. All of his emotions came flooding out in that moment and murderous rage began boiling within him until he felt like nothing else but vengeance could fill the emptiness inside him. Slowly standing up from where he knelt, Hunter felt rage course through him - newfound strength born from pain and sorrow. He glared at the men surrounding him before quickly grabbing a knife he had hidden in his sock. With a sudden determination in his eyes, he stabbed the man closest to him in the neck, narrowly missing his carotid artery. The man let out a blood curdling cry and dropped to the ground as a cloud of dust billowed from beneath his body. His gun then slid across the dirt and before the rest of the men had time to react, Calvin came out from behind a tree, firing his weapon and killing three of the four men where they stood.

“My god am I glad to see you, Calvin.”

Calvin then looked over and noticed that Sandra and her family were laying down near the porch of the small cabin not moving.

“What happened, Hunter?”

“They killed them. Sandra had nothing to do with this man. They just shot them in front of me.”

“Jesus Christ, I’m so sorry, Hunter. We’ll avenge their deaths if it’s the last thing we do.”

“Why are we doing this, Calvin? I’m losing everyone I care about, and for what? To fight a battle we are going to lose anyway?”

“Don’t say that, sir. We are going to put an end to their reign of terror once and for all. You have Carmen and I who will follow you anywhere. Sir, we will be with you through it all.”

Two of the men lay dead, their lifeless bodies crumpled on the dry dirt. Their leader lay on the ground in a pool of his own blood, his shirt soaked red from the knife wound Hunter had inflicted upon him. He glared at Hunter with disgust and hatred before sputtering out, “You.... You killed them.” Hunter took Calvin’s rifle and stared coldly back as he pointed the gun directly at the man’s head. “It’s not me who destroyed them ... it’s you.”

The man saw that there was no talking himself out of this one and prepared for death when suddenly
