In the case of seventh chords, this alteration is clearer as instead of playing a II minor seventh chord, you’d play a II dominant seventh chord. In the key of C major, this chord progression would be D7-G7-Cmaj7 instead of Dmin7-G7-Cmaj7.

The VI-II-V-I Chord Progression

This chord is simply the combination of the II-V-I chord progression plus an extra chord; the VI chord, which is a minor seventh chord.

Try playing the VI-II-V-I chord progression (from the above illustration) in their root form and when inversion is applied to the II and I chord of this chord progression. You’d notice how much better and easier this chord progression is when inversions are used.

Inversions are used by pianist or musicians to transit from one chord to the closest available chord inversion and for harmonizing melodies by making certain notes in a chord be at the top or bottom of that chord.
