Using the dial of your camera, select Time Value mode by selecting Tv on a Canon or S on a Nikon. In Time Value mode, the camera’s light sensor will be automatically selecting an appropriate aperture size to correctly expose the shot (versus automatically selecting the shutter speed in Av mode).

It’s important to note that you will need a tripod when you’re using shutter speed to blur motion. As mentioned earlier, you won’t be able to get a crisp image with a shutter speed slower than 1/60th of a second without a tripod. Tripods are expensive, but you don’t need to break the bank to hold your camera still.

Frugal Tip

A great substitute for a tripod that you should keep with you at all times is a cheap, old-fashioned bean bag. It isn’t as versatile as a tripod, but it can be perfect for resting your camera and getting a crisp photo when using slower shutter speeds. It’s especially useful when you’re traveling because it won’t take up much room in your bag, and will help cushion your camera against inevitable bumps. If you really want a tripod, this one is great for the price ( http://amzn.to/18tKgvD ).
