Chapter 11
From a dark corner of Golden Hills, Lieutenant Delov watched Angel leave the two strangers. He assumed they were Americans, probably from one of the US intelligence services. Berlin was thick with such operatives these days.
Rubbing his chin, the Russian knew he had a decision to make. Given the admiralâs threat about his longevity, or lack thereof, every move he made from this point forward was a life and death issue.
His official reason for being in Berlin was the same as it had been on his previous assignment to Germany, an attaché to the Russian embassy located just over two kilometers away. That original posting had been a reward of sorts, a month-long hiatus after a six-month assignment to train the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on the latest Russian anti-tank missile system.
Any assignment in a Muslim country was hell, the lack of Vodka, women, and entertainment in general a restrictive lifestyle for a Russian man. Were it not for the bathtub gin distilled in their quarters, the lieutenant would have surely lost his sanity.
The Iranian officers either didnât know, or didnât care about the transgression, and after completing the training class and follow-up evaluation, Delov had received excellent reviews regarding his performance.
Moscow needed to keep their radical allies to the south happy. Sales of arms and munitions were critical to Russiaâs economy and standing in the worldâs military pecking order. His superiors, being pleased with the results of the mission in Tehran, had rewarded the young officer with a short assignment in Berlin.
That reward, however, soon proved to be his undoing.
Watching as the two strangers continued to sip their beers and visually ogle the passing dancers, Delov was reminded of his first visit to Golden Hills.
Like a kid in a candy store, the virile naval infantryman had spent an entire paycheck after just two nights in Berlin. During one of those romps, he had met Danka.
Delov considered himself a man of the world, an international warrior who had survived some of the most grueling training on earth. He was a combat veteran with experience in both espionage and direct violence. There had even been rumors that the young lieutenant was being groomed for a position in the elite Russian intelligence services.
âYouâre going to be like a British spy in all of those old movies,â he had daydreamed. âBeautiful women, fast cars, and missions in glamorous places to save Mother Russia.â Delov had visions of himself in a tuxedo, playing high stakes games at Moroccan casinos before pummeling the agents of Moscowâs enemies.
Danka had fit right into his fantasy. She was the most beautiful woman Delov had ever met, with a body that would make any man roar with hormonal fury. She was also far more sophisticated and worldly than the Russian girls heâd dated in the past. She had traveled, knew multiple languages, and was extremely bright.
While he would have never admitted it, Delov had experienced love at first sight. Giddy and high-headed with his success and future prospects, the
