A short guide to the canned beers in Cambodia

8% ABV) offer plenty of flavor. They taste much stronger than most black beers you find in Vietnam and have well-balanced aftertastes despite having very high levels of alcohol. They are similar to Guinness but maltier; Angkor stout and Black Panther stout also have strong notes of coffee. They are not only amazingly good but also very cheap: a 330 ml bottle or can costs about $1.50 USD. When it comes to the light lagers (about 5% ABV) there is not so much to say. They are light as any international pale lager with a short taste and finish. You have Singha and Leo here, which originates from Thailand. Every shop has at least one or two kinds of black beer. The unique thing in Cambodia is that you can get a few international ales on bottle here. Beers like Sierra Nedada Pale Ale can be found at a handful of places.

Beers at a regular super market in Siem Reap with beers also from Japan, Thailand and Vietnam Munich Germany Beer Restaurant is a microbrewery with two beers on tap, Gold and Stout. Both are German-style lagers with a medium body and taste. The food is mainly Khmer and prices are good: you get a 300 ml glass of beer for $1.50. The menu is in English, but most staff do not speak English. Address: Sothearos Boulevard (opposite the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Memorial Park) T: +855 (0) 81889966

Himawari microbrewery Opened in 2012 inside Himawari Hotel in Phnom Penh, Himawari makes six beers that are served on tap: five ales and one oat stout. Production is small-scale with each batch smaller than 1000 litres. They use a wide range of hops and malts. Himawari received the prize for best pale / amber ale at the Asia Beer Awards 2013 and the International Beer Competition 2013 award for best Australasian /international style pale ale.

The beer scene is changing in Cambodia and growing interest in beer will most likely cause more microbreweries to open in the next few years. Himawari plays an important part in this developing industry. Most drivers know this hotel and it's easy to find. Address: 313 Sisowath Quay, Phnom Penh. T: +855 (0) 23214555

Laos Laos has a population of about 7 million and a lower GDP than Cambodia ($2,100). The economy is not so strong and many people struggle to make ends meet. Beer consumption is low and locally produced Beer Lao dominates 99% of the market. No one has yet started a microbrewery in Laos and the beer options are quite few. If you plan on staying here a while, make a stop in Vietnam or Cambodia and fill your bag with beers before you travel to Laos.
