That night, Margot sat at the window overlooking the cobbled street below. All she wanted to do was fall asleep and dream so she could talk to the beast, but her head was spinning. She’d expected her summer in France to be unique, but this… This.

What would she tell the beast if she saw him in her dreams tonight? He wanted her to find him when she was awake, and she had. But the fairies wanted her to keep it a secret, even from him. What was the right thing to do? She knew about him before she learned of the fairies, and her loyalty was with him. If the circumstances were reversed, she’d want to know.

“Sipping chocolate?” Sage passed her a hot mug filled with a thick, dark chocolate drink with a dash of cinnamon floating on top.

Margot took a tentative sip and the sweet drink went down smooth. “Mmm. This might be the best thing I’ve ever tasted.”

“Good. Drink up. It’ll help you sleep.”

Clove and Thyme had left after Margot had spent all her questions. Almost all. “What about Aunty Suzette? She’s not one of you, is she?”

“No, Suzette is not one of us,” said Sage. “She is your great-aunt and a descendant of a bookselling family. She does not know who we really are.” Sage looked over the top of her glasses. Her eyes were piercing.

“I won’t tell her. It’s Thyme you have to warn.”

Sage sat in the armchair watching Margot sip her chocolate drink. “I want to let things sink in for you, but tomorrow, we should have a serious talk.”

Margot nodded. There was only so much she could absorb at once, but she wasn’t looking forward to what kind of serious talk she would have with Sage.

A group of people walked past the bookshop below. “Pub’s closed,” she said absently. The last of the day-trippers walked by on their way out of town, completely unaware that something very odd was occurring in their midst.

“I’m a bit woozy. I should go to bed.” Margot dropped her mug, and it landed on the area carpet with a dull thump. A bit of the sipping chocolate spilled onto the beige fibers. “I should clean that up.” The words sounded mumbled coming out of her mouth.

Sage came over and helped her up. “That’s it. This way. Ease back into bed. Watch your head. Sleep well.”
