Chapter 7

Nutritional Myth-Busting

The average pregnant woman is inundated with rules. Don’t eat soft cheese. If you eat lunchmeat, reheat it to kill the listerias. Don’t change your cat’s litter. You absolutely must not drink any alcohol at all. Don’t eat fish; you risk exposure to toxic levels of mercury. Avoid raw milk and raw cheeses. Don’t drink more than a cup of coffee per day. Don’t lie on your back. Don’t eat more than 30% of your calories as fat. And, the list goes on.

The rules can be overwhelming. In fact, there are so many of them, many women have started pushing back. I know I did. I wanted to know if there was really anything to these taboos.

Turns out, every culture has a set of taboos. But perhaps even more eye-opening is the idea that these taboos aren’t universally shared. For example, in France, doctors encourage pregnant women to not eat raw vegetables! If you’re pregnant and eating salad, people will look at you like you’ve grown a third head. And yet, French culture assumes that pregnant women should drink a glass of red wine per day for health!

So, in this chapter, I’ve set out to explore some of our culture’s most common pregnancy taboos and nutritional myths and separate out the fact from the fiction, using traditional wisdom as my guide.
