Chapter Thirteen

Although Hunter had lived in Los Angeles for many years, it still felt a bit strange to be back, especially after the last few months of east coast island living.

The only traffic he had experienced in Marigold was foot traffic, and even that was rare. It was mostly concentrated on the boardwalk, where people gathered in the evenings to watch the sunset, or outside of popular restaurants.

There was traffic everywhere in LA, and seemingly all the time. He had spent hours upon hours sitting in his car throughout his career, staring at the bumper in front of him and willing things to move, but now it felt strange. He kept checking his watch, then checking his ride share app to see how far away they were, then looking out the window.

He had flown into LA to audition for the role of William in the historical drama he was excited about, one of the few in-person auditions he’d had in the past few years. He was established enough that sometimes the roles came to him or the casting directors were fine with him sending a video of his performance, but this was different.

Even though the source material was niche, the movie was already getting some buzz. This role was different than ones he’d had in the past, much more serious, and his career had slowed down enough in the past few years to warrant an audition. But he didn’t mind. After starring in one too many underperforming action films, he’d decided to be choosier about projects, which came at a cost. And he had moved across the country on top of that.

Traffic started inching forward again, and his driver tried to switch lanes, only to get honked at. The driver muttered something under his breath and made his way into the other lane, then off the highway.

“This traffic gets worse every day,” the man said with a sigh.

“It seems that way. I don’t miss it.” Hunter looked outside at the palm tree lined road, which was nearly as busy as the freeway had been.

Hunter truly missed what LA had meant to him back when he’d first moved there—it had represented his love of acting and his dream of actually making it in the tough business. When he’d gotten his career off the ground, he’d fallen into the glitz of it all, from the expensive clothes to the award shows to the fancy cars, before realizing that all he wanted was the core of it: acting and creating something that moved people, whether it was to laughter or to tears. He wanted the simple life and his craft, and hoped that this audition would allow him to have both.

“Where are you visiting from?” The driver glanced in the rearview mirror with a look Hunter had come to know well. He knew Hunter’s face but couldn’t place him.

“From Massachusetts—this little island called Marigold. I used to live here for a long time, though. I’m in town for an audition,” Hunter told him.

“Ah, I knew it.
