Chapter Four

“Where am I? What happened?”

I looked around the stark white hospital room, crinkling my nose at the smell of antiseptic.

“You’re OK Claire,” a deep voice answered. “You fell down the stairs in front of the house and hit your head on the concrete. You have a concussion.”

I shook my head and groaned in pain as red swam before my eyes. I blinked a few times until the shadowy figure over my bed became clear. Male. Handsome. Kind blue eyes. Short blonde hair. Clean shaven. Baby face.

“Who – who are you?” I asked in confusion.

“I’m Doctor Martin,” he said. “I’ve been taking care of you.”

My head throbbed painfully. “Where’s Jonathon?” I asked.

“Who?” he asked in confusion. He looked over to the other side of my bed. I turned my head and saw my best friend Janice looking at me with a concerned frown.

“Jonathon is, was, her fiancée,” Janice explained. “Does she have amnesia, Doctor? Did she lose her memory?”

“A lot of times when there’s a head injury people are confused when they first wake up,” the doctor responded. “The often forget what happened right before they were injured. It can take a while for things to clear up.”

Janice nodded. “How long until she remembers?” she asked.

“It might be a few hours or a few days. It all depends. Just be patient with her. It will come back to her.” He patted my leg comfortingly and gave me a kind smile. “I’ll check back in with you in a few hours and see how you’re doing.”

Janice came around to the chair on the side of the bed and dropped into it with a sigh. She looked older than I remembered. I guess I hadn’t noticed before, but then again, none of us was getting any younger.

“Where is Jonathon?” I asked her again. “Is he on his way?”

“Um. Jonathon’s not coming Claire,” Janice said carefully, her expression stricken.

“What are you talking about?” I asked in confusion. “Of course he is. He’s my husband. Why wouldn’t he be here? Did you call him?”

Janice paused, her eyes filling with tears. She shook her head.

“What is it? What happened?” I asked her with alarm. I heard the machine behind my head start to beep as my heart rate increased and I fought a sense of panic.

“Do you really not remember Claire?” she asked sadly, watching me intently.

I shook my head. It hurt to shake my head, and I grimaced. “Remember what? What happened to Jonathon?”

“Oh god,” she said, tears falling down her face. “Claire, he’s dead.”

I gasped in shock.

Janice continued. “Jonathon died. He’s been gone for about ten years now Claire.”

“What?” I said loudly, then winced again at the pain in my head. I lowered my voice and tried to understand what was happening, trying to clear the cobwebs in my head. “What are you talking about? I didn’t even know him ten years ago.”

Janice looked panicked. “Claire, do you know what year it is?” she asked cautiously.

“Of course,” I huffed. “It’s 2009.”

She shook her head and grabbed my hand, holding it tightly.
