WHY? E. coli, semen, urine, yeast, mold, lice, and bedbugs are among the things you might find lurking in your hotel room. Reports have shown that while most motels and hotels wash the sheets and pillowcases between guests, the bedspreads are often left for long periods without being washed. You’re probably not likely to get seriously sick, but the things lurking below the surface are pretty disturbing. The American Automobile Association (AAA) recommends taking the cover off the bed before sleeping and putting a towel on any stained or dirty surfaces before sitting down.

! WORDS OF CAUTION: If the room seems particularly dirty, be on the lookout for bedbugs, which are small insects that live in bedding, furniture, and walls. Rooms with a bedbug infestation are said to have a musty, sweet odor. You may also want to clean both the hotel remote control and the phone with a disinfectant wipe; tests done by AAA have found that they may harbor bacteria, germs, or bodily fluids.
