MARYLAND, APRIL 2000

You were a prisoner of war!” Mary exclaimed. “Good heavens! I would have died if I’d known they had captured you.” She caught her breath and gently fanned her face. “I suppose not knowing was easier than having to live with the knowledge that the Germans had captured you. What a terrible thought!”

Robert smiled. “Yeah,” he said softly and took a long drag off the cigarette. “I guess that I don’t need to tell you that I was frightened to death. I didn’t have any choice but to walk up that long road to where the Germans were waiting for us.”

Mary looked out the window. The afternoon would be over before long. Everything looked peaceful and serene. Life went on as if it had been this way for a thousand uninterrupted years.

“Seems quite lovely out there,” Robert said. “Who’d believe that all of that nice, quietly ordered way of life was paid for by the lives of people who died in World War II? Today most people don’t even remember much about what happened.”

Mary studied Robert’s face. Time had taken its toll, but she still saw the handsomeness. “I remember, Robert.” She cleared her throat. “I remember our time together in Sterling.”

Robert nodded his head. “Yeah.” He answered softly.

“It was the best time in my life.” Mary’s voice quivered.

He looked away and didn’t answer. Robert had turned his face so she couldn’t see his eyes. Mary waited for what seemed an interminable amount of time, but she didn’t speak.

“Maybe I ought to go on with the story.” Robert finally turned around, and his eyes looked reddish.

“Sure.” Mary shook her head. “I want to know everything. Please tell me what happened next after you decided to surrender. I know you were frightened out of your skin.”

Robert took another puff. “Wasn’t easy,” he said, “but the five infantrymen and I kept walking down that long road out of Bullingen with our white surrender flag blowing in the cold wind. We looked like lost chickens wandering off to be slaughtered.”
