Cat and Cow (Chakravakasana)

This sequence of exercises gently mobilizes the spine and has a balancing effect on the upper body.

Practicing the exercise

1. Come onto all fours and move your spine gently up and down. If you cannot kneel on the floor, move the spine while standing. While exhaling, let your back become very rounded, like a cat arching its back. Open the shoulder blades and look towards your navel.

2. Now push the spine gently downwards again, and while inhaling, let your back drop like a hanging bridge. Pull your shoulder blades together and look upwards.

Repeat this five to eight times. Allow it to be a gentle and dynamic exercise. Then come into Child’s Pose (see page 57) and relax the spine.
