Chapter Nineteen
By the time I stepped inside the bed and breakfast, rain soaked my hair and clothes. A puddle of water formed at my feet, rivulets of water streaming down my face.
Martin swept into the foyer from the parlor, gasping. âYouâre dripping water all over my floors!â He raised the back of his hand to his forehead dramatically. âWere you raised in hell? You know, I actually was raised in hell, and I behave with better manners than you.â
âIâm sorry, Martin. Thereâs a downpour outside, in case you hadnât noticed, and I didnât have an umbrella, and my daughter is in crisis, so I donât really give a shit about your floors.â
Mama Bear had come out of the cave.
He raised a green finger in the air. âIt sounds like youâre not your best self right now, so Iâm going to ignore those hurtful words.â
Bones appeared at the top of the wooden staircase, fluffy towel in hand. He descended the creaky stairs and handed it to me with a smile while Martin crossed his arms and huffed.
âPeople just arenât considerate these days.â
Bones gave him a âlookâ and the imp threw his hands up in the air. âFine, take her side. Iâm just saying, I wouldâve asked for a towel before entering someoneâs very tastefully decorated, very clean bed and breakfast.â
Bones shook his head at me as if to say ignore him, which wasnât an issue because I ignored most things that came out of Martinâs mouth.
âWhere is she?â I asked Bones, and he nodded his head toward the parlor.
I finished toweling off, then crouched down to wipe the puddle of water away before Martin had a fit, well, more of a fit than heâd already had. I walked into the parlor where my daughter sat by the window, scrolling through her phone. Her hair was wet, clothes damp.
âHey kiddo,â I said.
âIâm not a kid,â she replied without looking up.
Okay, so definitely entering hostile territory. Which I deserved. I was grateful for the steaming tea kettle sitting on the coffee table and poured myself a cup.
âHowâd you get here so fast?â
âMegan picked me up and brought me.â
I hit my head. âMegan! Thatâs her name. I told Daniel it was Mary, which was closeââ
Remy glared at me.
âRight. Not important.â I slid down to the couch, water dripping from my hair onto the cushions, which might send Martin into a catatonic state. âDo you have any questions for me?â I asked.
âOnly about a million.â Remy finally sat her phone down and looked at me. âHow could you lie to me like that? Magic is real? Witches are real? Iâm seventeen years old and just now discovering that my mom has a wand and can perform spells with it? Megan admitted as much in the car ride over here.â She gestured out the parlor. âAnd Martin is green! How did I not notice that Martin is freaking green!â
âI prefer chartreuse, actually,â Martin yelled from another room.
Her eyebrows scrunched. âAnd what is Bones? I mean, heâs huge, like eight feet tall, and I somehow didnât see it until today.
