Chapter 18

Sasha ran out into the dark night through the tempest that was raging, cursing her decision to park the truck down by the stable. By the time she reached it, her hair was soaked with the chilled raindrops, which ran into her eyes when she slicked her hair back on her head. She jerked the door open and was glad she had turned the dome light off. She wanted to complete this portion of her plan in total stealth. She could not jeopardize anyone, including James or Marie if they chose to look out the window at that precise moment.

Sasha turned the key to start the engine and listened as the pounding of the rain on her hood drowned out the soft purr. Sasha reached down to the console turning off the headlights and placed the truck in gear as she pulled onto the driveway. When she reached the hard road at the end of the driveway, she turned the lights back on. Even the strongest beam could barely break through the dense darkness that surrounded the truck. The wipers pounded furiously across the windshield to move the rainwater away from her field of vision. Sasha drove slowly and carefully through the storm and was relieved to see the lights of the city when they came into view. The strong winds buffeted the truck as Sasha drove across the river and into New Orleans.

The weather had kept most of the city’s occupants inside their homes tonight so the traffic was very light for the midnight hour. Sasha guided the truck through the narrow alleys, dodging windswept debris as she drove into the Quarter. Neon lights cut through the darkness, advertising drink specials and the entertainment promised inside for a minimum cover charge. A good rainstorm would do this place wonders, Sasha thought as the reeking stench of stale urine and spent liquor raced toward the storm drains, flushing the streets clean albeit only temporarily.

Sasha drove in front of each of the homes the Bellfontaines used for brothels, her frown growing as she failed to locate Ray. She turned the truck around in an alley and headed for the Garden District. If he weren’t at home for the evening, she would delay her plan for another day. As she drove, a taxi flew past her sending a wave of rainwater across her windshield. Sasha cursed at the impatient driver as he steered his car over in front of her. Sasha gripped the steering wheel tighter and slowed the truck to allow the maniac ahead of her plenty of room to maneuver the slick streets.

Sasha slowed even further when she saw the driver turn on a blinker and prepare to turn into the driveway of Ray Bellfontaine. The rear door flew open a moment later and a young woman raced through the rain toward the front door. The lazy bastard would not get out in this weather, but he obviously had no qualms about one of the working girls getting soaked to the bone while coming to service him.
