OVERLORD-C-CLASS DROPSHIP SNARL

BRZO DROPPORT

TUKAYYID

FREE RASALHAGUE REPUBLIC

2130 HOURS, 21 MAY 3052

The ilKhan looked up from his terminal. Blood stained the length of his right arm, its flow stemmed by a rag tied around his bicep. Numerous, untended gashes stippling his broad torso confirmed rumors that his Gargoyle had taken a head shot during the assault on Brzo. The lines on his face hinted that his worst injuries were the kind that didn’t leave scars. Twenty-one days on Tukayyid seemed to have aged Ulric Kerensky ten years.

Natasha smiled and held up two beers. He gestured to an adjacent seat.

Clan Wolf had captured Brzo. The Com Guards fought for every meter of ground, reforming and rallying multiple times as the Wolves drove into the mountain valley. No matter what dirty trick or diversion the Com Guards tried, they eventually fell before the Wolf onslaught. The Wolves were whirlwinds of death, averaging a kill ratio of 1.5 to 1 in the final assault. They had won both objectives, and could take great pride in being the only Clan to achieve this feat.

But the unthinkable had happened. The Clans had lost. It was sobering.

Natasha handed Ulric a bottle and eased into her seat.

“It’s done, quiaff?” she asked.

“Aff, I formally acknowledged ComStar’s victory twenty minutes ago. The Precentor Martial has graciously extended an offer of hegira.”

“That was generous of him.”

“Anastasius Focht is an honorable man. It was what I would have done in his place.” Ulric opened his beer.

“You passed along Phelan’s request?” Natasha asked.

“I did. Focht granted permission for the Bloodright to fill Cyrilla Ward’s vacancy here on Tukayyid, but he will be unable to attend.”

Natasha arched an eyebrow.

“The Primus has recalled him to Terra. He says he is to receive a reward, but he was being unusually evasive. I believe he fears something unsavory awaits him.”

“The Inners are corrupt and foolish. They reward failure and punish success,” Natasha said with a sneer. She had a passing thought of her long-dead lover, Joshua. He had seen the inherent treachery of the Inner Sphere long before I did. If only I’d listened. Why do I always find him in my thoughts after a loss? “This is why we will ultimately prevail.”

“Perhaps,” Ulric said. He paused, perhaps considering whether to say something more, but then changed subjects. “How did Alpha Galaxy fare?”

“Preliminary casualty reports put KIAs at twenty percent, with at least as many wounded. The Lion-Hearted were particularly hard hit during the final assault. They were involved in building-to-building combat prior to the Com Guards’ surrender. Most of the casualties are Elementals, but they lost several promising MechWarriors as well.”

“That matches our projections.”

“Aff, it is unfortunate that we lost Khan Radick.”

“Focht was watching the assault on Brzo closely. He said you made short work of the Level II responsible for Radick’s death.”

“I should have had that Thug, too.”

“Six kills in just the assault on Brzo, and twelve total for the campaign. I think your reputation is safe.”

“Speaking of reputations?”

“To the matter at hand then,” Ulric agreed. “Assuming Phelan wins his Bloodname, he will be well-positioned to succeed Radick.
